The 2013 Ancient City Game Fish Challenge is in the books. This year's tournament was fished by 78 boats from Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina. On day one 49 fish were brought to the scales with the heaviest fish weighing in at 46.55 lbs caught by the North Carolina team on the Traveller. Day one ended with 9 fish on the leader board over 30 pounds and the tenth place fish weighing in at 29.65 lbs. With a number of boats still in the hunt for the prize money day two was sure interesting. Many captain stay on the beach for day two with the weather conditions; however several nice fish were brought to the scales. Many teams in the top ten weighed nice fish on day two and gave Bob Johnson on the Traveller a run for his money. However in the end, Bob Johnson weighed a 32.65 lb fish on day two to win the overall two day aggregate tournament. The prize money for the heaviest fish was awarded to Kenny Crawford on the Crawfish with his 43 lb plus Kingfish caught on day one (this was the second biggest kingfish of the tournament; however Bob Johnson had already won the aggregate divsion).
The backwater divsion of the tournamet present excitement as well this year. The slam division ended with a tie for the heaviest three fish slam between John Jordan and Deedo Nelson, due to weigh in time John Jordan was the overall slam division winner with a three fish slam weight of 14.65 lbs. Other notable backwater fish belonged to Ralph Waldrop with the heaviest redfish and Russell Oldenburg Jr. with a 7.00 lb flounder. This was Russell Oldenburg Jr. heaviest flounder he has caught in his young 10 year old fish career. Also, James Revels weighed a nice redfish on day two to finish fourth in the largest fish division.
I would like express my sincere gratitude to Terri Rothenhausler and Tony Revels for allowing the Ancient City Game Fish Assoication to fish our tournament in loving memory of their son Jerad Revels. A hugh thank you needs to go to Ocean Grove RV Center for donating a beautiful Tailgate TV/DVD/Radio handmade combo for raffle. A scholarship will be established in Jerad Revels' name with funds gathered from the raffle, tournament, and other generous donations.
I would like to thank all of the anglers that came out to fish the tournament, it was a great turn out and I hope everyone enjoyed themselves. Also, I would like to thank all of the volunteers who helped with the planning and execution of the tournament without each and everyone of you it would not have been successful.
We have already started the planning for the 2014 Ancient City Game Fish Challenge and hope to see each and everyone of you back next year. We had fun this year and will definately continue that next year.
