April 2001- NEWSLETTER

General Information:

Next Meeting: Our next General Membership Meeting will be held April 10th at the Elk's Lodge on A1A. We will be meeting in the Small Room (Dining Room). Please enter through the Bar (awning entry) on the South side of the building.

HELP: Because of the external noise coming from the other room (Bar) and the size of our attendance, we are asking for your help keeping the noise down while the general meeting is conducted. Thanks.

Program: This month speaker will be Steve Moore who will tell us about "Fly Fishing". Thanks to Al Cumbie who was our speaker last month. He spoke about King Mackerel fishing, showed several interesting rigs, and answered many of our questions.

Snacks: Rob Autrey provided snacks last month, they were very good, thanks Rob. This month Bill Phillips will provide snacks. The list of volunteers we circulated last month has been misplaced. We will try again this month.

Membership: Don't forget to invite a friend to our meetings. REMINDER: Dues for new members are ½ price starting now thru May 31, 2001. New members who joined last month are: Elmer & Gerry Pierson, Paul & Patty Starrett, Gail Lombardi and her Sister Elaine Heinrich, Michael & Jill Thomas, and Debbie Foose. Charlie & Ramona Rake renewed their membership. Glad to have all of you with us. Welcome aboard!!!

Membership Drawing: Matt Jenkins name was drawn but he was not present for the $100.00 drawing. SOOOO SORRY MATT. Be there this month for $150.00. You must be present to win.

Raffles: Al Cumbie will have a GPS, cast net, SS Pliers, rod & reel and a variety of other items and gift certificates for you to win. He also says he will have a "Reef Marker"; I call it a "finger taker".

Web Site: The web site is up and running. The address is acgfa.com. If you have not checked it out, you should. You can contact any Board Member or myself by e-mail by clicking the listing in the "Contact Us" section of the web site. For your convenience, there are forms that you can fill-in and print to join/renew your membership, or enter the Kingfish Challenge.

Logo Contest: There were several beautiful logos submitted, unfortunately, none were suitable for use on shirts, caps, letterhead, etc. We really appreciate the interest. The Board is still working on this.

Help Wanted: It's that time of year again. We need your help working three Tournaments. This is an opportunity to help the club, see quality game fish, and have a great time!!! We assist the North East Florida Marlin Association and the Kingbuster conduct their tournaments by providing help operating the Radio Base, Weigh Station, Fish Cleaning, and Boat Handling, etc. In return, the tournaments help us financially. We also need your help working our Kingfish Challenge Tournament. See the 2001 Tournament Schedule attached for additional information.

Blessing of the Fleet: The Blessing of the Fleet will be April 8th. For a great time, you should join the ACGFA Flotilla that will anchor-up starting at 10:00 am. Bring plenty of rope, bumpers, food, and your favorite beverage. Location will be around the bend South of the 312 Bridge. See you there.

Boat Ramp Parking: Members are experiencing problems with non-boaters and other boaters blocking in boat trailers by parking in travel lanes. This, in addition to the overcrowded conditions, is causing tempers to flare. If you are having these problems, you might help by calling or writing to your City and/or County Commissioner.

ACGFA History: Dorothy Louise Reef

48-Ft Boat "Dorothy Louise" Sunk Offshore in "Reef Project"

May 23, 1974
This was a St. Augustine Record article published about the ACGFA reef project. The Dorothy Louise was a 48-ft boat donated by Gordon Whittmore of South Gate Marina (was located on San Sebastion River at Oyster Creek). The boat was loaded with tire units that were sunk with the boat. The Dorothy Louise was towed by a shrimp trawler donated by Desco and sunk at the "East 70' Spot". ACGFA workers included Michael McQuaig, Melvin McQuaig, E.J. Pacetti, Herbie Acosta, Keith Wernick, Jimmy Creech, Sid Loveday, Albert Delany, Dean Shanon, Bill Moore, Victor Capo, Chester Benet, and Bob Masters.

Newsletter and Web Site Sponsorship: If you or your business is interested in advertising in the Newsletter and Web Site, the cost is $25.00 per month for a business card ad. Bert Walton' Auto Service has bought the ad shown below. The income will help defray the cost of printing, postage, and web site fees.
