President’s Message – November 2009

Hi folks!  I'm back again as your president.  We hope to see more enthusiasm during the next fishing year along with some really up to date fish stories.  I'm also looking for some talented speakers of the month, so if you have any recommendations or suggestions please see me.

Along the same lines I've spoken to Robert Johnson of the Jodie Lynn.  He has advised me that there will be a meeting from 3-7pm at the Crowne Point Plaza in Jacksonville on November 12 regarding the new regulations on "vertical line fishing" (bottom fishing).  The regulations extend from Desco Wreck out to 200 miles offshore.  The fish that they are proposing to regulate are all reef fish, including all grouper, snapper, porgies, grunts, tile fish, trigger fish, spade fish, etc.  In other words, over 100 species of fish, plus or minus.  I'm going to participate in a boat flotilla at the Jacksonville Landing on the same date starting at 7:30am and am hoping for additional participation from our ACGFA members.  Anyone who wish to participate please contact me at 904-794-1907 or via email joelcarmel@bellsouth.net.  This will be an organized affair bringing an awareness of this important issue to the community and will have local television news coverage.  If we don't take a stand on this critical issue now, we and our children may never be able to keep a bottom fish again.  So get used to eating Chinese seafood!

Go Fishing!  Capt. Joel
